The Power of Oversized Art in Your Home

Design Inspiration

Lately I’ve been especially drawn to oversized artwork—and I want to share why this design choice is having such a moment in my work and in my own home. One large statement piece can completely transform a room. It creates instant focus, adds a sense of intention, and makes a space feel more custom and thoughtfully designed without needing a full renovation.

When a room feels “unfinished,” it’s often not because something is missing—it’s because nothing is anchoring the space. A single large piece of art can solve that immediately. Instead of scattering several small pieces across a wall, one bold work gives the eye a place to land and allows the rest of the room to breathe.

Art, at its best, tells a story. And when you love a piece enough to hang it in your home, that story becomes part of your everyday life. It reflects your personality, your memories, and what you value. It also becomes a natural conversation starter when you have guests. I often ask clients, “What do you want your walls to say about you?” Because they absolutely are speaking—whether we plan it or not.

How to Think About Large-Scale Art

If you’ve ever stood in front of a big empty wall and felt unsure, you’re not alone. Many people hesitate when it comes to oversized art because they worry about choosing the “wrong” piece or making a bold commitment. But here’s the truth: large art is often easier to work with than small art because it simplifies everything around it.

Here are a few design strategies I use when selecting or creating large-scale pieces:

1. Start with the wall, not the artwork
Look at the space first. Is it a focal wall behind a sofa, bed, or dining table? Or is it a long hallway that needs impact? The size of the wall should guide the scale of the art. A good rule of thumb is to fill at least two-thirds of the available wall width when placing art above furniture.

2. Think in terms of impact, not perfection
Oversized art doesn’t need to be complicated. Abstracts, large photography, or even simple tonal pieces can be incredibly powerful. The above piece my grandmother, Ellen Heinz created in oils while living in Shell Beach.  Sometimes you choose art based on your location.  What matters most is how the piece feels in the room—does it bring calm, energy, warmth, or drama?

3. Don’t be afraid of DIY scale solutions
If a large original piece isn’t in the budget, there are creative ways to achieve the same effect:

  • Frame an oversized textile or vintage fabric
  • Enlarge a personal photograph and print it on canvas
  • Create a simple abstract painting using a large canvas and a limited color palette
  • Use a series of panels that read as one continuous image

The goal is not complexity—it’s presence.

4. Let one piece do the work
When you commit to a large statement piece, you often need less décor around it. This is where many rooms become more elevated. The art becomes the focal point, and everything else supports it rather than competes with it.

5. Choose something you can live with every day
Trends come and go, but your home should feel like you. If a piece makes you pause, smile, or feel something when you look at it—that’s the one. You don’t need to overthink it. You just need to respond to it.

A Note on Character Pieces

Alongside oversized artwork, I’ve also been loving the use of classic decorative accents—especially brass horses. These timeless pieces add warmth, history, and a collected feel to bookshelves, consoles, and coffee tables. They work beautifully alongside large art because they bring balance: bold statement on the wall, subtle character in the details.

Final Thought

If you’re standing in front of a blank wall wondering where to start, consider this your permission to go bigger. One strong piece of art can completely shift the energy of a room and make your home feel more intentional, more personal, and more finished.

And remember—your home doesn’t need more “stuff.” It needs the right pieces that tell your story well.

Until next month…
