Turning Odd Pieces of China into Unique Cake/Candy Stands - A DIY Guide

Transforming Vintage China into Elegant Cake and Candy Stands

As an interior decorator with a passion for creating new and interesting pieces for the home, I often find inspiration in unexpected places. One day, I looked at my collection of odd china pieces gathered from thrift shops and garage sales and decided to embark on a DIY project that would transform them into charming cake and candy stands. Today, I'm excited to share with you the step-by-step process of making these delightful and functional pieces for your next tea party or special occasion. The best part? You can "use what you have" and repurpose your china and candlestick holders to create your very own unique cake and candy stands.

Materials You'll Need:

  • Candlestick holder

  • Plate, bowl, or any china piece you like

  • Clear epoxy craft glue (I recommend E-6000 or GOOP)

Step 1: Prepare Your Pieces Before you begin, thoroughly wash all the china pieces and candlestick holders you plan to use. Clean surfaces ensure a strong bond for your cake/candy stands.

Step 2: Mark the Center To ensure your stands are centered and well-balanced, mark the center of each china piece. This will serve as a guide when attaching them to the candlestick holders.

Step 3: Glue It All Together Apply a generous amount of E-6000 or GOOP glue to the top rim of the glass candlestick holder. This glue is excellent for bonding glass, metal, ceramics, and more. I got mine at Joann's with a 40% off coupon! Carefully place your china piece onto the candlestick holder, and for added stability, turn them both upside down to dry. To apply even pressure, you can place a book on top of each upside-down stand. Let them dry overnight to ensure a secure bond.

Step 4: The Final Touch Once the glue has fully dried, you'll have your very own unique cake/candy stands, repurposed from china and candlesticks you could find at any thrift store, flea market, or garage sale. I love that I made each stand separate, allowing me to use them in various ways. Just remember to consider the height of the base concerning the plate you choose to ensure stability.

Step 5: Explore Your Creativity -- Feel free to explore your creativity by using different combinations of china and candlestick holders. You can mix and match colors and styles to create stands that perfectly suit your home decor and occasion.

The above are three separate stands.  I just put one on top of the other using earthquake putty to keep them together.  It is more versatile. Below you see two of the three in use.

With a little DIY magic and a dash of creativity, you can turn those odd pieces of china and forgotten candlestick holders into stunning cake and candy stands. The process is not only fun but also environmentally friendly, giving new life to old treasures. I'd love to see your creations, so don't forget to send me a photo of your unique cake/candy stand or post it on our HomeDecoratorsClub.com Facebook Page. As for me, I'm diving into more china treasures this weekend to come up with new ideas. Enjoy the process of creating something new out of something old!

Want to see more?    I have taught this craft as class at Del Webb, to Christian Women's Groups and wives programs at retreats.  I can lead a class for your woman's group too.  They are two hours, I bring everything that is needed and your guest goes home with a new stand - or two.   And they have a lot of fun.

Let's talk Entertaining! User Good morning, I want to make a blog post on my collection of "Diane" Dishes" I received the collection from my aunt, grandma and some garage sale finds. I have used it for my wedding, showers, anniversary parties, birthdays and most recently for the Jane Austen Tea. I have a set of 48 though I am missing a few dishes to call it a full set. I use it only once or twice a year but it has come in so handy for events. I have lent it to friends for their special events too. Here is some info the the blog post: Diane China dishes - Back in the day… Stores handed out promotional dinnerware to keep their customers loyal. Let's take a stroll down memory lane and explore the charming world of vintage tableware giveaways from yesteryears. Back in the day, businesses used to sweeten the deal for customers by offering free dinnerware as promotional items. Whether it was grocery stores, gas stations, or even cereal companies, everyone seemed to be in on the act. Remember those days wh
